Under the Swahili Tree
This charming restaurant is located along Marula lane in Karen. I love how vibrant it is right from the entrance with beautiful art works on display along the vast corridor that opens up to a stunning garden setup with lots of seating space and fun decor draped with lesos and ankara fabric.
I really like that they have a bonfire area for those cozy evening dinners. The menu is quite standard with various dishes available for breakfast lunch or dinner.
Hemingways Eden - The Deck
Hemingways Eden is a boutique hotel located deep in the heart of Karen. Like really deep in Karen, if you don’t live in or near the Karen environs just put aside a good 40min to drive there. Once the roadtrip is done though, you are welcomed into a most serene space! The hotel’s restaurant, the Deck, is perfectly positioned next to a lagoon and borders the Giraffe Sanctuary forest, giving it such a picturesque view.
270° Rooftop
The rooftop culture in Nairobi is really growing and I’m here for all of it, I love a good rooftop hang. The 270° rooftop is a restaurant located on the 18th floor of the Escada building along Lantana road. Being on the 18th floor already is quite high up so you can imagine the views you’ll see up there.
The restaurant has both an indoor and outdoor section, so if you’d like a bit more privacy or more quiet you can choose to sit inside or if you want the full 270 degree experience - step out onto the rooftop and pick a spot to enjoy basking in the Nairobi sun.
Five Senses
This fine dining restaurant is located at Galana plaza in the heart of Kilimani. It’s a French cuisine restaurant with an additional African flare to all their dishes. A hostess meets you at the door when you enter to direct you to your table. I found the place quite inviting - warm lighting, ambient music and well spaced seating so it doesn’t look too cramped.
For a fine dining restaurant though, I felt like their decor and furniture was quite dated, giving it a more aged feel as opposed to luxury… I think they need to spruce it up a bit to match their brand and their prices.
Cotton Tree
Cotton Tree is another new Vietnamese restaurant located in Gigiri. It has such a beautiful outdoor setup, the decor is very boho chic. It has lots of greenery and space for kids to play in. So because of its popularity, you can’t be assured of space if you just walk in, you definitely need a reservation. I tried to call in the morning to make a reservation but no one answered the phone so I decided to just go and try my luck.
Akira
This Asian fusion restaurant is located on the 1st floor of Westgate Mall, Westlands. I was impressed by the decor already when I entered; the minimal wood styling and sleek furniture are so well done. They have different types of seating areas depending on what your mood is like. If you’re a big group you can take one of the bigger dining tables, if you want more of an experience you can try the Japanese style dining tables where the seats are not elevated and have you literally sitting on the ground - on very comfy cushions though!
